Jennifer Charles et Oren Bloedow parcourent le globe et enchaînent les disques depuis + de 30 ans. Les new-yorkais, connaissent plus de succès en Europe que chez eux. Ils ont imposé leur style et ont pris le risque de créer leur musique à leur image plutôt que de se laisser manipuler par les maisons de disques. On dit de leur musique que c’est du black rock.
Ce soir, c’est 30 ans de carrière qu’Elysan Fields fête dignement au Café de la Danse.
Garciaphone, Olivier Perez avec ses chansons tristes
18h30, le batteur d’Elysian Fields, Olivier Perez, ouvre le spectacle en solo, tout seul avec son micro et sa guitare sèche. Son nom de groupe Garciaphone. Il plaisante, se dit opportuniste du fait qu’il est le batteur du groupe pour profiter de présenter ses titres en première partie. Ses chansons folks s’enchaînent, avec en bruit de fond des ventilateurs qui brassent l’air torride de la salle.
Elysian Fields, la diva Jennifer et son chef d’orchestre Oren
19h26, Jennifer, Oren & Co (les frères Perez basse/batterie + le clavier) arrivent sur scène pour nous présenter leur show suave et intense.
Jennifer est vêtue d’une tenue noire, chaussée de chaussures à talons et d’un gilet court, blanc et entouré de dentelles.
« Grace Sherwood » est le premier morceau joué, et c’est la première fois que le groupe l’interprète à Paris. C’est l’un des titres les plus « rock » de la soirée, avec un côté Arctic Monkeys, mais ce n’est que mon avis.
« Must Have Meant » plonge la salle dans la grâce de la voix de Jennifer. « J’essaie de vous comprendre, et je mourrais de vous défendre » .
Ensuite, « Song for a Nun » amen, et « This World Is Just a World » . On sombre dans une ambiance Trip Hop un peu jazzy. Jennifer nous hypnotise avec sa voix aux yeux de serpents. Les frissons nous font oublier la chaleur étouffante de la salle.
L’ambiance jazzy se poursuit avec « What the Thunder Said » et « Shooting Stars » . On a l’impression d’être dans un film de Tarantino. Cette voix suave et mélancolique nous fait fondre de plaisir.
« Tidal Wave » , Jennifer joue avec sa voix, le refrain est assez léger et coquin.
« Passing on The Stairs » , premier duo entre Orel & Jennifer, on entre dans l’univers de Leonard Cohen c’est bô !
« Before the Crashing Waves » , une balade un peu country avec une chant à la Lana Del Rey mais version Jennifer Charles.
Entrent en scène les 3 violonistes sur « Live for the Touch » , on ne se lasse pas de cette trip hop jazzy d’Elysian Fields !
Une intro au violon nous invite à entrer dans l’univers de « Black Acres« , une chanson sensuelle parlant d’un amour intense et passionné !
« Last Night On Earth » , « Lions in th Storm » , on se retrouve dans une ambiance cabaret, slow tempo. Et c’est là que le gilet entouré de dentelles de Jennifer prend tout son sens. On a l’impression qu’elle se transforme en un ange avec des ailes blanches. C’est une chanson avec beaucoup de légèreté, on a envie de décoller avec elle.
Pour finir le set, bel hommage rendu à Loïc Barrouk (directeur du Café de la Danse qui nous a quitté cette année) avec « Dream Within a Dream » .
Rappel, 3 titres « Ball Drive » , « Ashes in Winter Light » deuxième duo, standing ovation à la fin et une Jennifer avec les yeux humides. Et la soirée se termine à 21:00 avec « Shadow of the Living Light » .
Entre Enfer et Paradis
Ce soir, The Elysian Fields nous a ouvert leurs portes et nous avons joui de leur musique diaboliquement sombre et douce.

Elysian Fields warms up the Café de la Danse
Jennifer Charles and Oren Bloedow have been traveling the globe and recording albums for over 30 years. The New Yorkers have found more success in Europe than at home. They have established their style and taken the risk of creating their music in their own image rather than being manipulated by record companies. Their music is said to be black rock.
Tonight, Elysan Fields is celebrating 30 years of career in style at the Café de la Danse.
Garciaphone, Olivier Perez with his sad songs
6:30 pm, the drummer of Elysian Fields, Olivier Perez, opens the show solo, all alone with his microphone and acoustic guitar. His band’s name is Garciaphone. He jokes, calling himself opportunistic because he is the band’s drummer to take advantage of presenting his songs as the opening act. His folk songs follow one another, with the background noise of fans circulating the sweltering air of the venue.

7:26 PM, Jennifer, Oren & Co (the Perez brothers on bass/drums + the keyboard) take the stage to present their smooth and intense show.
Jennifer is dressed in a black outfit, wearing high heels and a short vest, white and trimmed with lace.
« Grace Sherwood » is the first song played, and it is the first time the band performs it in Paris. It is one of the most « rock » songs of the evening, with an Arctic Monkeys vibe, but that’s just my opinion.
« Must Have Meant » immerses the audience in the grace of Jennifer’s voice. « I try to understand you, and I’d die to defend you ».
Next, « Song for a Nun » amen, and « This World Is Just a World ». We sink into a slightly jazzy Trip Hop atmosphere. Jennifer mesmerizes us with her voice like snake eyes. The shivers make us forget the stifling heat of the room.
The jazzy atmosphere continues with « What the Thunder Said » and « Shooting Stars ». It feels like being in a Tarantino movie. This smooth and melancholic voice makes us melt with pleasure.
« Tidal Wave », Jennifer plays with her voice, the chorus is quite light and cheeky.
« Passing on The Stairs », the first duet between Orel & Jennifer, we enter Leonard Cohen’s universe, it’s beautiful!
« Before the Crashing Waves » , a somewhat country ballad with a singing style like Lana Del Rey but in Jennifer Charles’ version.
The three violinists come on stage for « Live for the Touch », we never tire of this jazzy trip hop from Elysian Fields!
A violin intro invites us to enter the universe of « Black Acres » , a sensual song talking about an intense and passionate love!
« Last Night On Earth » , « Lions in the Storm » , we find ourselves in a cabaret atmosphere, slow tempo. And this is where Jennifer’s lace-trimmed vest makes perfect sense. It feels like she transforms into an angel with white wings. It’s a song with a lot of lightness, it makes you want to take off with her.
To finish the set, a beautiful tribute to Loïc Barrouk (The director of the Café de la Danse who passed away this year) with « Dream Within a Dream« .
Encore, 3 songs: « Ball Drive » , « Ashes in Winter Light » second duet, standing ovation at the end and a Jennifer with moist eyes. And the evening ends at 9:00 PM with « Shadow of the Living Light ».

Tonight, The Elysian Fields opened their doors to us, and we enjoyed their devilishly dark and sweet music.
