C’est donc par un bel après-midi de printemps chaud que j’ai le privilège d’échanger avec Neil Hannon (The Divine Comedy), un grand merci au label [PIAS] !
L’occasion est belle : l’annonce de son prochain et prometteur album –Rainy Sunday Afternoon- pour le 19 septembre, précédé par une belle chanson, single imparable, accompagné d’un fort joli clip !
« Achilles » (nos amis britanniques mettent un « s » à la fin du nom du héros qui périt de la flèche de Pâris, lequel était assisté par Apollon et touché là où vous savez) et ce titre n’est pas le fruit du hasard !
Il s’agit d’une forte référence au poème de Patrick Shaw-Stewart « Achilles In The Trench » évoquant la terreur et l’effroi d’une soldat british coincé dans l’abominable campagne des batailles de Gallipoli en 1915. Si vous avez oublié cet épisode absurde et sanglant de la première guerre mondiale, rafraîchissez-vous la mémoire ici. Le poète, l’auteur a lui-même survécu à cet enfer pour périr à Cambrai en 1917.
Encore une preuve, s’il en fallait encore, de l’intelligence et la finesse intégrés dans les paroles écrites et chantées par Neil Hannon.
Le très beau clip réalisé par Raphaël Neal est un montage de séquences y faisant allusion et mixé avec d’autres épisodes historiques notoires.
Ma conversation avec ce grand auteur-compositeur-interprète est totalement sympathique et agréable, il est fin et malicieux, modeste et brillant. La vie est belle quand on parle avec un tel artiste.
Evidemment il me rappelle avec les yeux qui brillent que sortir un album est son métier, que c’est ce qu’il adore : écrire des chansons. Quelle belle carrière et ô combien de disques magnifiques !
Note pour quiconque voudrait « démarrer » et connaître The Divine Comedy : direction les yeux fermés vers le très fort Charmed Life : The Best of The Divine Comedy – 2022. C’est juste un coffre à trésors ! Vous pourrez en apprécier les formidables paroles sur le site officiel. Je recommande à tout écolier ou étudiant de s’en imprégner pour a : apprendre la langue b : être touché par la classe.
Je lui rappelle à cec sujet qu’il contribue, mais oui, mais oui à aider les Frenchies à progresser en anglais, car nous adorons ses chansons et il nous esbaudit, tout en nous permettant d’écouter une musique au top, orchestrée, agréable, pertinente et joyeuse. C’est la Culture, avec un grand C.
Au passage, nous évoquons aussi la belle ONG qu’il a fondé avec son épouse My Lovely Horse Rescue permettant de sauver moult animaux. Cet homme a aussi beaucoup de cœur, bravo !
Très francophile et peu francophone, il se sait aimé dans l’Hexagone et nous fera la joie de venir en concert en France en 2026 ; Réservez déjà votre soirée du 2 ou du 3 mars (Salle Pleyel).
Ravi et heureux de l’avoir rencontré, j’attends avec impatience l’album entier, qui sera évoqué, avec entrain et joie, prochainement en ces lignes.

And so it is, on a beautifully warm spring afternoon, that I have the privilege of speaking with Neil Hannon (The Divine Comedy). A heartfelt thank you to [PIAS] for making this happen!
The occasion is a happy one: the announcement of his forthcoming and highly promising album Rainy Sunday Afternoon, set for release on September 19, heralded by a splendid single and an equally elegant music video.
“Achilles” — (our British friends add an “s” to the name of the hero who met his fate by Paris’s arrow, aided by Apollo and struck, as you well know, in that spot) — is no arbitrary title.
It is a pointed reference to the poem Achilles in the Trench by Patrick Shaw-Stewart, evoking the terror and dread experienced by a British soldier trapped in the horrific Gallipoli campaign of 1915. If this absurd and bloody episode of the First World War has slipped your memory, I suggest refreshing it here. Shaw-Stewart, both poet and soldier, survived that particular hell only to perish in Cambrai in 1917.
This is, yet again — should we still need convincing — proof of the intelligence and literary elegance embedded in the lyrics penned and sung by Neil Hannon.
The striking music video, directed by Raphaël Neal, is a masterful montage of allusive sequences interwoven with other notable historical events.
My conversation with this remarkable singer-songwriter is thoroughly pleasant and engaging. He is witty and sharp, modest yet brilliant. Life feels richer when one has the chance to speak with such an artist.
Naturally, his eyes light up as he reminds me that releasing an album is his craft — it is what he loves most: writing songs. What a magnificent career he has had, and how many truly beautiful records he has gifted us!
A note to anyone seeking to discover The Divine Comedy: head straight for Charmed Life: The Best of The Divine Comedy (2022) — eyes closed, ears open. It’s nothing short of a treasure chest. You’ll find the lyrics, remarkable as ever, on the official website. I wholeheartedly recommend it to any student or learner of English:
a) to enrich their language skills
b) to be touched by pure class.
I remind him, in passing, that he indeed contributes — yes, truly — to helping us French speakers improve our English, for we love his songs and they enchant us, all while providing music that is refined, orchestrated, delightful, meaningful, and joyful. This is Culture — with a capital C.
We also touch upon the admirable NGO he co-founded with his wife, My Lovely Horse Rescue, which works to save countless animals. A man of great heart as well — bravo!
Deeply fond of France, even if not really fluent in French, he knows he is loved in the Hexagon, and he will be gracing us with his presence in concert in 2026. Mark your calendars for March 2 or 3 (Salle Pleyel).
Delighted and honoured to have met him, I now eagerly await the full album, which shall, rest assured, be discussed with enthusiasm and joy in these pages soon.
