La sortie d’un nouvel album d’un groupe qu’on aime est un plaisir pour deux raisons. Primo, on a du nouveau matériel à se mettre dans les esgourdes, secundo ça promet un rendez-vous sur scène. Il n’était donc pas envisageable de rater les Torontois de PUP pour leur date parisienne, occasion rêvée de défendre les couleurs de leur nouvel album »Who Will Look After the Dogs? »
Après une première partie tout à fait énergique et au son de grande qualité, les Illuminati Hotties (de grands amis du groupe vedette de la soirée), place au show. Les quatre complices sont en forme, Stefan est en voix (et Dieu sait qu’il revient de loin… cf notre interview avec lui avant le concert). Le nouvel effort de studio a droit à une belle part de la setlist, avec un »No Hope » très efficace en ouverture, ou un »Getting Dumber » abrasif.
Mais la setlist ira chercher dans tous les albums de PUP, avec une belle patine old-school : les deux premiers albums ont ainsi à eux deux représenté neuf morceaux joués ce soir-là.
Le public alterne pogos, crowd surfing (en se suspendant au plafond, parfois) et chant en chœur. »Sleep in the Heat » provoque même d’interminables séances de »Woooo-hooooooo » chahuteurs qui empêchent presque le groupe de jouer ! »J’aurais du me souvenir qu’il faut jouer cette chanson en dernier lorsque nous sommes à Paris », plaisante Stefan qui se fend de plusieurs interventions adorables, parfois en français, qui galvanisent la foule.
Les classiques s’enchaînent : le fameux enchaînement »Tour / DVP », »Dark Days », »Kids », jusqu’à un »Old Wounds » final, laissant les parisiens épuisés mais heureux. Rendez-vous fût pris, rendez-vous fût honoré, rendez-vous sera pris encore.

The release of a new album by a band one admires is a pleasure for two main reasons. First, it offers new material to delight one’s ears; second, it heralds an upcoming live performance. Missing the Toronto-based band PUP’s Paris date was, therefore, inconceivable—this event was a golden opportunity to showcase their latest album Who Will Look After the Dogs?
Following an energetic and impeccably produced opening set by Illuminati Hotties (close friends of the evening’s headliners), the show commenced. The four bandmates were in excellent form, with Stefan in fine voice (and, as we know from our interview with him prior to the concert, his recovery was no small feat). The new studio effort received a prominent place in the setlist, with a particularly effective rendition of « No Hope » as the opener and a scathing performance of « Getting Dumber. »
The setlist delved into PUP’s entire discography, with a delightful old-school sheen: the first two albums alone accounted for nine tracks performed that evening.
The audience alternated between frenzied moshing, crowd surfing (sometimes hanging from the ceiling), and jubilant singalongs. « Sleep in the Heat » even incited endless rounds of boisterous « Woooo-hooooooo, » nearly preventing the band from playing! « I should have remembered to save this song for last when we’re in Paris, » Stefan joked, interspersing his remarks with charming moments (some even in French) that electrified the crowd.
The classics followed one after another: the legendary sequence of « Tour / DVP, » « Dark Days, » « Kids, » culminating in a rousing finale with « Old Wounds, » leaving the Parisians exhausted but elated. The date was set, the date was honored, and future dates shall surely follow.
